Rules of Jimmy’s Night Shelter

Anyone who would otherwise be forced to sleep rough on the streets of Cambridge may stay at the Night Shelter.

Guests may gain admittance to the Night Shelter from 7pm to 11.30pm each night and leave by 9.30am each morning.

Guests will be asked to complete a Housing Benefit Form on their first night at the Shelter. A guest who is unable to claim Housing Benefit (perhaps because they are claiming it elsewhere) may, at the discretion of the Project Worker, stay at the Night Shelter for one night only.

The Night Shelter is a place for people to sleep. All guests are asked to respect this. If a guest is unable to sleep, they must be careful not to disturb others.

Alcoholic drink is not allowed to be consumed on the premises. Guests are asked to hand over bottles and cans for safe keeping on arrival.

Solvents, non-prescribed drugs and drug paraphernalia should not be brought onto the premises nor should they be consumed, injected, smoked, shared, swapped, traded or talked about. An amnesty bin is provided within the search and guests are challenged on first entry in case they have something they want to dispose of in the bin. (Prescribed drugs will only be allowed if the owner can prove they have been prescribed the drug)

Personal & bags checks. We check personal clothing and bags for drink, drugs and drug paraphernalia as guests arrive and re-enter the Shelter.

5-minute toilet & shower checks. We may check toilets & showers every 5 minutes and demand the door be opened. Reasons are for safety and to check activity.

Smoking is allowed in Courtyard only to comply the the English Smoke free laws.

Violent and Threatening Behaviour, both physical and verbal (including racist and sexist comments) is unacceptable. Guests may be asked to hand over any weapon they may have with them. Open display of a weapon is Threatening Behaviour.

Animals are permitted on the Night Shelter premises as follows:
Dogs are to be kept on a lead and under the control of their owners at all times.
Noise pollution is a serious issue. Dogs are to be kept quiet at all times.
Dog owners are responsible for clearing up any mess made by their dog a.s.a.p.
A dog must sleep in the same bedroom as its owner.
Owners who do not keep their dog controlled will be asked to leave the Night Shelter with their dog.

Bedrooms:
Guest’s personal belongings must be stored in the under-bed baskets in time for the guest to leave the Night Shelter by 9.30am each morning.
Any belongings left after a guest has not stayed at the Shelter for one week will be disposed of.

Guests who do not respect these rules may, at the discretion of the Project Worker, be asked to leave the Shelter for the remainder of the night.

A serious infringement of these rules may result in a guest being banned from using the service for an extended period. It is the policy of the Night Shelter to press charges where injury to staff and volunteers or damage to property is involved.
